Ronin Pizza - Best Handmade Crust for a Pizza in Bangkok?

Ronin Pizza Review - Best Handmade Crust for a Pizza in Bangkok?

Just look at that toasted and bubbly crust!

I’ve had many pizzas in Bangkok, and I don’t mean the delivery ones like Pizza Hut or Dominos, I mean this city is home to some damn fine authentic Italian pizza and also Chicago Pizza. My current reigning champion for the best pizza in Bangkok (as well as pasta) is Ranee’s with Pala Pizza Romana coming in a close second. However, a new player has come onto the field, Ronin Pizza.

Ronin Pizza has been making huge waves in Bangkok recently especially on social media with them being touted as an alternative high quality and homemade pizza chain known for crust and their delivery capabilites. A couple of Ronin Pizza branches have since opened throughout the city. The Ronin Pizza that I went to is the one at Lat Phrao 18. So let’s get right into to eating!

Ronin Pizza’s Claim to Fame

Ronin Pizza Handmade dough oven

Modern pizza innovation with the industrial oven

When Ronin Pizza blew up on social media, there’s one thing people always mention first about their signature Neapolitan style pizzas, the crust. Ronin Pizza’s crust is made from scratch and aside from pizza they also use that same dough for their Focaccia. The dough is fermented and proofed with care, allowing for that bubbly and airy structure that you’ve come to expect from a good piece of Focaccia.

Paired with the heat from their industrial ovens, the pizza crust comes out crisp, bubbly, and nicely toasted on the outside. Here is when you can really notice the texture of Ronin Pizza’s crust. It’s like handmade artisan bread that just happens to be topped with tomato sauce, cheese and a plethora of other ingredients.

Competition for Pizza in Bangkok is getting fierce with places like Pizza Mania, Soho, and even the Chicago Deep Dish style of Capone’s. so it’s nice to places like Ronin Pizza setting the quality bar higher up. We Bangkokians won’t settle for Pizza Hut anymore! My personal best pizza places in Bangkok is Ranee’s if you are wondering :)

Ronin Pizza’s Menu

Ronin Pizza’s Menu

Ronin Pizza’s menu is easy to read and and straight to the point

Ronin Pizza’s Menu is pretty simple, they have pizza (duh), salads, appetizers, and a few selection of pasta dishes. For the pizzas, they come in 2 sizes: Medium (10 inch) and Large (12 inch), and you also get the option of adding more toppings. You got your usual pizza toppings like Hawaiian, Pepperoni, and Margherita, but there are some interesting options on there like a Ham Truffle and Parma Ham.

For the salads, you got your usuals like Caesar salad and Rocket salad. Then you got the social media trendy one which is the Burrata Salad, then you got a unique one which is the Sassy Salad (Balsamic, Tomato, Pumpkin seeds, Mango Dressing).

Ronin Pizza also has pasta dishes such as the Carbonara, Vongole, and the Thai style spicy Pad Kee Mao. And we can’t forget their signature appetizer, the Garlic Butter Focaccia (more about that below).

Ronin Pizza’s Pricing

I think for the pizza, Ronin Pizza's pricing is fair and comparable to the other pizza places in Bangkok, around 319-419 THB for medium pie depending on the topping. But for the side dishes especially the salad, it’s a bit over priced. You mean to tell me, lettuce tomato, and fake bacon bits is enough to justify more than 2/3 of the price of a medium pizza? Noooo way.

Caesar Salad with Cherry Tomatoes

Ronin Pizza Caesar Salad with Cherry Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a controversial addition to Caesar Salad for sure but don’t knock it till you try it

First up is the appetizer and you know we gotta start off with a nice salad before we get into all the grease and carbs. We ordered a Caesar Salad and bewilderingly, Ronin Pizza’s Caesar Salad comes with tomatoes, cherry tomatoes to be exact. And no croutons? Not unheard of but quite peculiar.

Anyways, it’s the usual fanfare you find in pizzerias in Bangkok, freshly cut and crisp Cos Lettuce, a nice drizzle of a sweet and mayonnaise-y “Caesar Salad” sauce, A shower of Parmesan cheese, and a generous helping of those fake bacon bits that are made out of bread, on the menu it says “crispy Bacon”, that’s disingenuous, it’s not bacon, it’s toasted carbs made to look at taste like bacon. Also no croutons.

The salad is tasty and refreshing as you would expect, a nice textural contrast with the creamy dressing, the crunchy bacon bits, and the crisp lettuce. The tomatoes were juicy and surprisingly very sweet, actually very delicious cherry tomatoes.

Nothing special, good Caesar Salad, good start to our Ronin Pizza meal.

Garlic Butter Focaccia Bread Sticks

The most beautiful thing I have ever put in my mouth, Garlic Butter Focaccia

Serving up our second appetizer is one of Ronin Pizza’s specialties, the Garlic Butter Focaccia. First off I wanna say that this dish is beautiful, mainly because of the dusting of parmesan shavings on top, making it look like this dish is a snow covered mountain.

Anyways, the texture of the Focaccia is bread itself is very very good, a golden crispy crunch on the outside crust, with a soft, pillow-y interior with a slight chew. The generous amount of garlic butter soaked into the Focaccia bread is almost sinful but it’s oh so buttery and garlicky.

There is some sprinklings of oregano on there which adds a nice herby aroma, and the parmesan shavings give the indulgent Focaccia bread a nice needed sharp salty kick to contrast the rich flavors.

One serving is 8 pieces, I could have dozen more, and I mean servings not individual pieces.

Rigatoni Carbonara with Homemade Bacon

Ronin Pizza Rigatoni Carbonara

Beautiful strands of melty Parmigiano Reggiano

Here is where Ronin Pizza started to fall apart for me. We ordered a Carbonara to share, the dish uses Rigatoni pasta, topped with some nice fatty bacon bits, and more of that shaved Parmigiano Reggiano.

The Carbonara was average, in fact I might go as far as to say it was below average… Something was seriously off with Ronin Pizza’s Carbonara, I don’t know if we were just unlucky that day and the chef somehow messed up our carbonara but it just doesn’t taste right.

The Rigatoni noodles were cooked al dente, tasted alright, the bacon was fatty and salty with a meaty chew, but the sauce… The carbonara sauce was not it. It’s a cream based sauce and it tasted very bland with very little flavor, almost an unpleasant milky taste. The dish looks nice though but the flavor was underwhelming.

Truffle Mushroom Pizza

Ronin Pizza Truffle Mushroom Pizza

Brown and grey isn’t typically a very appetizing color but this truffle pizza looks damn good

Next up is pizza number 1 of 2, the Truffle Mushroom Pizza. I’ve had a damn good truffle pasta at Ranee’s and maybe it has skewed my taste buds a bit but Ronin Pizza’s Truffle Pizza, just like the Carbonara, was pretty average.

I’ll start off with the highlight, which is the crust. The handmade pizza crust shines bright here. The main body is thin, floppy, and a little chewy, while the crust is a gorgeous bubbly and crispy toasted delight. Crispy, chewy, and so so good. On a pizza, the toppings are only half the battle, and Ronin Pizza has definitely won the first half with their handmade pizza crusts.

What was dissapointing is the toppings. There is little truffle scent or aroma and the mushroom themselves have a strong and intense fungal flavor that overpowers the rest of the ingredients. There is a little drizzling of olive oil on top but it has no flavor, and having a slick oily coating on your lips and tongue isn’t pleasant.

It’s a tasty pizza because of the bread but the toppings are just eh… It’s a shame because there are makings of a great pizza here but it feels like Ronin Pizza isn’t reaching that mark quite yet.

Parma Ham and Rocket Pizza

Ronin Pizza Parma Ham and Rocket Pizza

It’s got all the colors of the Italian flag, red, green, white, brown, yellow, and a hint of black

The Parma Ham and Rocket faired better in my opinion. We got that same addictive pizza crust and for the toppings we got those sweet cherry tomatoes, thin slices of salty parma ham, a handful of rocket leaves, and a few thin slices of parmesan.

I’ll skip over to the toppings because I’ve already shilled for the crust. The toppings were tasty, meaty and salty parma ham, sharp salty parmesan, sweet juicy cherry tomatoes, and a little medicinal bitterness from the rocket. Although I will say that eating this pizza was messy, the thin crust couldn’t hold all the wet and cold (more like, room temperature) toppings and so picking this up like a normal pizza is gonna end very badly.

Overall a solid pizza, better than the Truffle Mushroom Pizza.

Conclusion

Pros

  • Ronin Pizza’s handmade crust is delicious, in fact anything bread related by Ronin is delicious.

  • Pricing is fair and a good selection of pizza toppings .

  • Delivery is available, in fact, Ronin Pizza is famed locally for their ability to deliver their handmade pizza.

Cons

  • Some menu items could use a little bit of work, Carbonara was bland, and the Truffle Pizza was lackluster

  • A weird combination of high quality preparations and some store bought ingredients make for an inconsistent presentation and taste. Eg. freshly handmade pizza crust but then use fake bacon bits for salad even though carbonara comes with real bacon.

Overall I am torn with Ronin Pizza, no doubt they have something great with their handmade crust, maybe some of the best for traditional pizza in Bangkok. But some inconsistencies and minor misses remind me that Ronin Pizza isn’t quite topping my list of the best Pizza in Bangkok just yet. Though their pricing is fair and they do offer delivery so it wouldn’t hurt to give Ronin Pizza a try!
