Veganerie Bangkok vegan restaurant

Tell me these fries don’t look mouthwatering

If you’ve been in Bangkok for a while you’ll notice that a bunch of Western style restaurants have been opening up recently. Vegan restaurants in Bangkok such as Veganerie used to be a rare sight, nowadays they’re readily available in many areas of Bangkok.

I’ve never had a proper Vegan meal before, so when my girlfriend found out about Veganerie, a contemporary Vegan restaurant in Bangkok, we were both eager to try it out. Veganerie advertises themselves as “The Ultimate Vegan Destination in Bangkok”, let’s find out if that’s true!

Rise of Vegan Restaurants in Bangkok

Veganerie vegan restaurants in bangkok

Modern and comfy interior design here at Veganerie

Vegetarian food is nothing new in Thailand, in fact we have our own annual 9 day vegetarian festival called เจ (Jay). Veganism however, is a Western concept that made its way into Thailand fairly recently.

You’ll clearly see the western ideology when you enter Veganerie, when I was there I saw that the majority of the customers (in fact, all of the customers) were westerners. Not saying that Veganism doesn’t appeal to the locals, but just pointing out that among the many Legendary Local eats in Bangkok, there are also places that accommodate to the more niche consumers, which is awesome.

Veganerie, Bangkok Vegan with Love

Veganerie is also a bakery that sells their own vegan based products like snacks and bottled drinks

As mentioned before, Veganerie advertises themselves as the best spot to get Vegan food in Bangkok. Veganerie opened its doors in 2016 by a vegan family who just wants to share some damn good vegan food with the world.

Nowadays, Veganerie has 6 restaurants spread throughout Bangkok, the one that I went to is at Phrom Phong, just behind Benchasiri Park, next to the Emporium Shopping Mall.

Veganerie is 100% vegan, 100% plant-based, Diary free, and Egg free.

Veganerie Menu

Veganerie’s menu is varied, the pictures are also very eye catching

Oooook, Veganerie’s menu is very big and with so many pretty pictures! This vegan restaurant specializes in a fusion of Western and local Thai dishes. The main type of foods you’ll see are Burgers, Pasta, Salads, and Thai Curries, all vegan of course.

There are so many dishes to choose from, my girlfriend and I spent quite a long time looking through the menu, and being completely lost on what to order because everything looked sooooo good!

Some standout dishes that I saw are:

  • Grilled Tofu Satay Veggie Salad

  • BBQ Pulled Pork Burger

  • Tom Yum mac & Cheese

  • Khao Soi Tofu Skin Noodles

Veganerie’s menu also has a wide selection of vegan ice creams and desserts on offer.

Veganerie Pricing

I would say the pricing is pretty fair considering Vegan food in Bangkok can be overpriced. Each dish is priced around 300 THB with a lot being around 250 THB which is a great deal for Western style food in Bangkok.

The portions are alright, not too big and not too small, though with it being mostly light vegetables, I can’t help but feel a little unsatisfied with my meal.

Fries with Vegan BBQ Pulled “Pork”

vegenarie BBQ pulled pork french fries

I just love fries

The appetizer my girlfriend and I ordered were these french fries topped with BBQ pulled “pork” which were actually mushrooms. These fries were served with vegan BBQ sauce and a vegan ketchup and mayonnaise.

The fries were… delicious, I mean, even a bad fry is good, you can’t go wrong with french fries, the ones at Veganerie were thick-cut fries with a crunchy exterior and a soft and fluffy potato interior.

The pulled “pork” was good, they’re basically just shredded grilled king oyster mushrooms, and I like mushrooms so these were good. Tastes nothing like real pulled pork though, but they good nonetheless.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by the mayonnaise, apparently vegan mayonnaise is a thing and it actually tastes like real mayonnaise!

Zucchini Noodles with Meatless Balls

They’re actually called “Zoodles” but I don’t like saying that word

For the entrees, my girlfriend ordered the Zucchini pasta noodles with tomato sauce and meatballs which were made with mushrooms and almonds.

The tomato sauce was very bright and tart in flavor, the zucchini noodles were crisp and have a nice texture that complements the vibrancy of the dish very well.

I didn’t quite like the “meatballs”, they tasted kind of funky. I think my issue is that I don’t particularly agree with how vegan foods try to mimic meat, I mean why can’t they just do their own thing? When you try to mimic real meat the results often just tastes weird and “uncanny” especially to people who are familiar with eating meat. Vegetables already tastes good, don’t try to be something you’re not, you know?

Also on that note, hidden in the tomato sauce were slices of vegan sausage that resembles those highly artificial Thai pink milk sausages you see at street food stalls. I don’t know why they put that in there, it tasted bad, just kinda strange.

Anyways, this Zucchini noodle dish (or Zoodles, as Veganerie calls them) is very nice and real refreshing. A great dish, Aside from the weird meat substitutes.

“Chicken” and Waffles with Caesar Salad

veganerie chicken and waffles

This dish looks a bit underwhelming but you don’t judge a dish by its side salad

I ordered the “Chicken” and Waffles, I know it’s boring but I was just really craving some chicken and waffles. Anyways, the plate comes with a side of Caesar Salad, and I’ll admit the whole plate looks kind of lackluster but it was actually pretty good.

The Chicken was an assortment of fried mushrooms, Shiitake and Enoki(?). The batter was crunchy and spiced well, the mushrooms were pretty good in flavor. However, there were some pieces of fried chicken that actually had had a similar fibrous texture to real chicken so that was pleasantly surprising.

The waffles were real good, a bit crispy on the outside, and soft and warm on the inside. To honest, I think the waffles outshines the “chicken” here. The Caesar Salad, was good. It was just basically Caesar Salad.

Conclusion

Pros

  • A large menu with lots of interesting dishes to try, from burgers, to pasta, to curry, to desserts.

  • Pricing is fair for this type of cuisine.

  • Healthy food that packs a good amount of flavor and seasonings.

Cons

  • Some meat substitutes tastes a bit off.

Overall I highly recommend you come and dine at Veganerie. This was my first real taste of vegan food and I was pleasantly surprised! The menu is varied and all the dishes looked super interesting to try, the pricing is very fair as well considering that western food can be a bit overpriced in Bangkok. And I love how it’s not only healthy food, but delicious healthy food.

The only downside that I experienced was that some meat substitutes like the aforementioned vegan sausage and “meatballs” were kind of funky. But I’d imagine that’s a common issue with a lot of vegan meat substitutes…

Overall, I had a great meal at Veganerie and for anyone who wants to try out this type of cuisine, this Bangkok vegan restaurant is a great place to start.
