It’s also the site of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Senado Square. Here is where you can find the most iconic tourist attractions in Macau such as:

Senado Square - The center of government during Portuguese colonial rule, very photogenic, pastel mosaic plaza, European Neo-classical architecture, and of course street food!
Ruins of St. Paul - Macau’s most famous landmark, the remnants of what was once the largest Catholic church in Asia!

If you’re planning a visit, this area is home to some of the most iconic five star hotels in Macau, some of which are only a few minutes walk from all the major tourist attractions. But be warned though that the Macau Peninsula is also the most densely populated part of the city but on the bright side it’s also the cheapest and most budget friendly.

But there are a few attractions to see in Taipa:

Taipa Village - The old town of Taipa, nice to stroll through the charming streets and souvenir shops

Welcome to the Las Vegas of Asia! The Cotai Strip! Cotai is actually a more recent addition to the SAR of Macau, the district was built on reclaimed land between Taipa and Coloane, which I will talk about more below.

Mega resorts, luxury shopping malls, world-class performances, and of course adrenaline inducing casinos, the Cotai Strip has everything you need to empty your wallets and enjoy a night of pure opulence! This is the area where I stayed at and it’s where you’ll find the highest concentration of the best five star hotels in Macau. In the Cotai Strip you’ll find:

Coloane: Natural and Relaxing

The last neighborhood is the area of Coloane, a more peaceful environment on the southernmost part of Macau. Coloane is the best place for relaxation in my opinion, especially if you like beaches and hiking. Though it is a less commercialized district so you’ll need to travel to Cotai or the Macau Peninsula if you wanna do some shopping or sightseeing. At Coloane you’ll find attractions like:

Beaches - Places like the Hac Sa Beach and Cheoc Van Beach are great for relaxing
Hiking - Lots of hiking trails and old colonial landmarks for you to explore.

I would recommend taking a day or an afternoon trip to Coloane to enjoy the beach, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend staying in Coloane especially if you are looking for five star hotels in Macau. Nevertheless, Coloane is a great district for those of you who enjoy the beaches and relaxing with nature.

For example, when I stayed at the JW Marriott Hotel Macau, I got upgraded to a premium family suite and had access to the VIP lounge where I can enjoy their afternoon tea service. Furthermore, if you’re traveling with a family or your parents, staying at a five star hotel is a great option for comfort and convenience.

Compare Weekday to Weekend Prices - The prices of Macau’s five star hotels can vary dramatically between weekdays and weekends, I recommend booking your stays Sunday to Thursday as that is when the nightly rates are the cheapest, sometimes even half the price of what it would cost on the weekends! For example an overnight stay at the Venetian Macao on a Saturday is ~250 USD but if you book on Monday it’s only 137 USD, what a steal!
Book Through Reputable Platforms - I book all of my hotel stays for every vacation with either Booking.com or Agoda. Because these are the platforms I trust the most, they provide good prices and discounts. But don’t forget to check the official hotel websites for exclusive offers and perks as well, especially if you have loyalty programs!

Within minutes from your luxury hotel you’ll be exploring the mosaic streets of Senado Square, admiring the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ruins of St. Paul’s, or eating a nice flakey Portugeuse Egg Tart at a heritage café tucked between neoclassical colonial buildings. This part of Macau is packed with cultural gems and authentic experiences, making it ideal for if you want more than just fancy restaurants and shopping. Located right in the heart of the Macau Peninsula, this hotel is impossible to miss with its golden, lotus-shaped tower and vintage neon signs that light up the night.

I would say the Hotel Lisboa is best for those of you who want to explore the Macau Peninsula, the hotel itself doesn’t feature many entertainment facilities aside from the famous casino and some notable Michelin starred restaurants… Though the rooms themselves are spacious and comfortable.

What the Hotel Lisboa lacks in facilities it makes up for in location. Being right in the center of the Macau Peninsula means you are within walking distance to famous landmarks and tourist attractions like the Senado Square and the Ruins of St. Paul’s, which are full of traditional street food, and colonial architecture.

Though the Hotel Lisboa does show its age with all the old money style elegance, if you value location rather than amenities then this five star hotel is for you.

Pros:

Located in the center of the Macau Peninsula, close to historic attractions and easy access to many of Macau’s street food alleys and markets
Home to many restaurants recommended by the Michelin Guide
Spacious rooms, with classic old money style luxury decorations

Located in Macau’s historic inner Harbor area, the Sofitel Macau at Ponte 16 is a stylish riverside escape with a fancy French elegance added to the mix. In my opinion this is one of the most elegant five star hotels in Macau.

Sofitel Macau at Ponte 16 is perfect for couples and those of you who love the European cultural aspect of Macau’s history. The rooms are spacious, with complete amenities. Also the Club Sofitel Lounge is a great place to relax and escape with a few evening cocktails, all complete with a beautiful view of the Macau coastline.

In terms of facilities, you’ll find an on site casino, two outdoor pools, a spa, and a mix of French and Cantonese restaurants to try. Though one downside is that I think this hotel is a bit isolated, it’s not connected to any entertainment hubs or shopping malls, and it’s located is quite far from other major landmarks. But it’s still a 10 minute walk to the historic Senado Square, which is a plus.

Beautifully elegant French design with river views

If you want to stay in the Macau Peninsula without much interest in exploring the historical landmarks then the Sands Macao is one of the most convenient five star hotels in Macau for a fast-paced, entertainment filled getaway.

Like if you’re on a quick day trip from Hong Kong then you’re in luck because the Sands Macao is located just across the Outer Harbor Ferry Terminal. This hotel is purely about entertainment, you can enjoy a fairly large casino, tons of on-site dining options like the Golden Court Buffet or the Copa Steakhouse, and plenty of live entertainment.

But that does come at a cost of being located further away from the historic areas of Macau and the hotel and rooms also being more compact in design compared to the other five star hotels in Macau. But if you want a quick gambling getaway then that shouldn’t matter much.

Pros:

Convenient location right next to the Outer Harbor Ferry Terminal
Comfortable rooms with great views of the harbor
Access to a large casino and live entertainment, perfect for if you just want to let yourself loose.

Cons:

The hotel is smaller and not that visually extravagant, some of you might not like that?
Not ideal for if you want to visit historical and cultural attractions within walking distance

In my humble opinion, I think that the MGM Macau is one of the most beautifully designed five star hotels in Macau with its iconic Grande Praça atrium, gorgeous flora decorations and pastel colored boutique shops and restaurants lining each side of the atrium. Standing in the middle of the atrium feels like I’ve been transported to mid 20th century Paris, in fact, a lot of the hotels in Macau seem to be going for this sort of classical European design language…

There are lots of on-site entertainment options at the MGM Macau too, behind the atrium is a large casino and some luxury designer shops as well as a couple of restaurants like Aji, a fusion Peruvian and Japanese restaurant. Just above the far end of the atrium is the Poly MGM Museum where you can learn about the history and various cultural artifacts of Macau

I would say the MGM Macau is perfect for couples or for those of you who enjoy art and creativity. Even the building itself is kind of like an art piece with its minimal blocky contemporary design.

Pros:

The hotel is beautifully designed with artistic interiors and a stunning grand atrium
Located near waterfront in the NAPE district, close to cultural landmarks and nightlife
Good amount of choices for dining options including Japanese and Portuguese cuisine
Comfortable, stylish, spacious rooms with luxury touches and incredible views

Not as many kid-friendly amenities in case you are traveling with a family and children
Limited outdoor space compared to larger resorts, might feel claustrophobic for some

Possibly one of the most luxurious five star hotels in the Macau Peninsula, the Wynn Macau is an iconic waterfront hotel that is sure to take a hefty chunk of money from your wallet. However the pure elegance, the incredibly friendly service, and the high end amenities on offer is surely worth it.

I’ll be honest, I’ve never stayed at the Wynn Macau because the price is too steep for me, but from the reviews I’ve read and the research I’ve done, the Wynn Macau boasts some incredible rooms and facilities. For one, the rooms are spacious, with generously large bathtubs, silk-covered walls, and views of either the city or the Performance Lake. The Wynn Macau’s signature attractions like the nightly musical fountain show, and the rotating Dragon of Fortune in the lobby also adds to the spectacle of this hotel. Of course there are also a luxury spa, outdoor pool, and Michelin Starred restaurants among other things.

I would recommend the Wynn Macau for couples on a romantic getaway, as well as art and design enthusiasts, or those of you who just want to splurge on luxury. Man, how many times have I said the word “luxury” so far?

Home to many Michelin-starred restaurants and a world class entertainment facilities
Very luxurious with the decor, service, and rooms.

If you’re wanting more luxury and comfort then the Cotai Strip is where I recommend you stay. This chunk of expensive land is home to some of the most iconic five star hotels in Macau. You’ll find everything from Michelin Star fine dining, to designer shopping malls, to Broadway worthy performances, and of course dazzling casinos.

When I was in Macau, I stayed at the Cotai Strip and to be honest, I didn’t want to leave my hotel because literally everything was there and the rooms are just so luxurious. Out of all the five star hotels in Macau I’ve visited, the hotel that I’ve stayed at, the JW Marriott Hotel Macau truly stands out for its incredibly warm hospitality and top notch service, literally some of the best I’ve experienced anywhere.

Located in the heart of the Cotai Strip as part of the massive Galaxy Macau complex, the JW Marriott is a very spacious hotel (so much so that it actually feels empty) where the rooms are sleek, modern, and super duper comfortable, even the bathrooms feel like you’re in a private spa! But what really makes the JW Marriott Hotel Macau shine is the staff, everyone from the concierge to the bell boys to housekeeping made me feel genuinely welcome and cared for, like I was staying at a friend’s home, a really rich friend’s home.

I would say that the JW Marriott Hotel Macau is perfect for families with children who want that balanced mix of comfort, convenience, and hospitality. You’ve got direct access to the Galaxy Macau complex, which includes a waterpark, shopping mall, restaurants, and casinos , great if you're traveling with kids or just want to unwind. If you’re looking for five star hotels in Macau with generous resort perks the JW Marriott Hotel Macau should be at the top of your list.

No doubt one of the most iconic five star hotels in Macau is The Venetian Macao. A massive complex consisting of over 3,000 suites, a literal indoor Venice with shops, restaurants, and a literal canal system complete with Gondola rides. I’ve stayed at The Venetian Macao before and the rooms are large suite-style rooms with a sunken living area, and a spacious layout perfect for families.

Guys, I’m not joking when I say that the resort itself is like a self contained city with luxury shopping, over 30 restaurants, bars, a huge casino, and an arena that regularly hosts international shows and concerts. But a little warning though, the resort is always busy, that’s because The Venetian Macao is also like a tourist attraction, a lot of people come here just to see the grandeur and visit the indoor Venice.

That said, even if you didn’t stay at The Venetian Macao, it’s worth coming to visit.

Pros:

Massive suites with lots of space, amenities, and comfortable layout
So much dining, shopping, and entertainment options within the resort
Central Cotai Strip location, close to other major hotels and attractions
Indoor Venice canals themed architecture and shops make it really fun to explore
Great for families with children, groups, and first time visitors to Macau

Always crowded, like seriously, the lobby and public areas can get overwhelming, not ideal if you want peace and relaxation
The resort is so huge that long walks are a very common occurrence

Let’s get that out of the way first, the Eiffel Tower is half the size of the real thing but it lights up at night and includes an observation deck that gives you a beautiful view of the Cotai Strip.

The rooms at The Parisian are comfortable and European inspired, though not as spacious as its sister hotel, The Venetian Macao. Amenities include a rooftop pool with views of the Cotai Strip, a well-equipped fitness center, spa, and a decent variety of restaurants from upscale French cuisine to casual dining options.

The Parisian is also connected to other resorts via indoor walkways so that means you have easy access to shopping malls and casinos.

Pros:

Unique French themed design with the iconic Eiffel Tower replica
Direct access to shops, restaurants, and nearby resorts
Family-friendly amenities and decent variety of restaurants and dining options
Great value compared to other five star hotels in Macau nearby

Cons:

Rooms can be a little bit small compared to the other hotels I’ve mentioned
Can get very crowded during peak hours, especially around the Eiffel Tower
Service isn’t as good compared to other hotels in the area, though still good

The Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau is one of the newest and flashiest hotels in the Cotai Strip, opened in 2021, this resort combining luxury with a lavish artistic flair that’s inspired by the palaces of Europe. It’s also home to 3 hotel brands: The Lisboa Palace, Karl Lagerfeld Hotel, and Palazzo Versace Macau.

The rooms are modern, spacious, and features quite a few high tech amenities (like those automatic Japanese toilets), with luxury touches like marble bathrooms and plush comfy bedding. There is also a casino (of course), a high end spa for the ultimate relaxation, upscale shopping malls, and multiple fine dining options.

This Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau lives up to its name and makes you feel like you are royalty living in a palace. So therefore it is ideal if you want to experience premium luxury. Though one downside is that it’s located on the eastern end of the Cotai Strip, slightly further away from the major Cotai attractions but still well connected via shuttles and walkways. Among the many five star hotels in Macau, the Grand Lisboa Palace is the most prestigious of them all, in my opinion.

Pros:

Elegant, and fashion forward design with three different hotel concepts under one building
Spacious, high-tech rooms with luxurious amenities also quieter than other hotels great for a more relaxed stay

Cons:

Slightly farther away from central Cotai attractions
