Your 1 Day Macau Itinerary at a Glance

A quick brief, in this 1 Day Macau Itinerary, I’ll be bringing you to explore some of Macau’s history and charm as well as to explore some of the modern sides of the city such as the various luxury hotels, Casinos, and luxury shopping malls.

I’ll start by bringing you to Senado Square, which is the historic center of Macau. There are lots to see in terms of Portuguese and European architecture, landmarks, churches, and government offices, much of which has influenced the daily life of the local Macanese population. Here is were we’ll also explore lots of the amazing Macanese street foods.

After exploring the historic heart of Macau, I’ll be taking you to Taipa island, just south of the Macau Peninsula, where I’ll be showing you the famous Cotai Strip, the “Las Vegas of Macau”. Here is where we’ll enjoy some of the more adrenaline fueled activities like gambling at the casinos, exploring luxury resorts, riding gondolas at the Venetian Macao, and saying goodbye to your your money as you splurge on luxury brand products, or if you’re like me, then window shopping is also a cool activity I guess.

I tried to make this 1 Day Macau Itinerary as balanced as can be, to ensure that you get to do the best activities and see the best things that Macau has to offer.

Is 1 Day in Macau Enough?

Now I know that 1 day might seem limiting but many people travel from Hong Kong via ferry to take day trips here, so in actuality 1 day is plenty of time to see all the major attractions in Macau.

Actually, I planned this 1 Day Macau Itinerary to make sure that you’ll cover all the main highlights of Macau like the Ruin’s of St. Paul, Senado Square, and even a visit to the Cotai Strip casinos. You don’t have to worry about food either because the best Macau street foods are already located in the places I will be bringing you to.

However, if you want to explore Macau at a slower place, or visit more attractions then 1 day is indeed limiting, that’s why I’ve included some recommendations for hotels in Macau to make your holiday more relaxing.

Best Hotels for your 1 Day Macau Itinerary

While on my trip to Macau, I personally stayed at the JW Marriott Macau in the Cotai Strip, as I was traveling with family and contrary to me, they prefer a more slow paced and relaxing lifestyle with plenty of expensive shopping. But if you prefer to explore more of the city’s history and culture, then the main Macau Island is where you’ll want to stay.

Whether you’re looking for a luxurious stay in a world-famous resort or a cozy boutique hotel with local charm, I’ve rounded up some of the best places to stay that will perfectly complement your 1 Day Macau Itinerary.

If you’re following this 1 Day Macau Itinerary and you enjoy exploring all the history, culture, and soaking in the authentic side of Macau, then staying on the main Macau Island (historic mainland) is what I would recommend.

Unlike the modern and flashy Cotai Strip, Macau Island is where you can find beautiful old stone paved streets and neoclassical European architecture that makes up the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Staying in this area is perfect for if you want to explore some of the historic attractions that I will be talking about later in this blog post like the Ruins of St. Paul and the A-Ma Temple.

The Cotai Strip is located on Taipa Island which is south of the historic mainland. Staying here is better if you want your 1 Day Macau Itinerary to be relaxing and slower paced with plenty of shopping, eating international buffets, gambling at casinos, world class performances, and immersing yourself in the high life.

During my visit to Macau, staying on the Cotai Strip made it incredibly easy to experience the fancier side of Macau without having to hop around too much. Though I will admit that traveling to the historic mainland from the Cotai Strip is a bit harder but it’s a fair trade off for being able to enjoy this sort of luxurious lifestyle to its fullest.

So if you want to jump head first straight into luxury here are some of the best luxury hotels on the Cotai Strip that I recommend for your 1 Day Macau Itinerary:

The Venetian Macao - Iconic, perfect if you want gondola rides, luxury shopping, and dozens of restaurants all in one place.

How to Get to Macau for your 1 Day Macau Itinerary

You actually have a few options to get to the Macau Peninsula beside the obvious plane: via plane, via ferry from Hong Kong, or via shuttle bus from Hong Kong. For this 1 Day Macau Itinerary, I assume that you’ll be taking a day trip so I’ll be focusing more on the ferry and bus from Hong Kong, but I’ll also give you some details on flights to Macau.

How to Get to Macau By Plane

I actually arrived to Macau via a flight from Bangkok via Air Macau and yeah, flying to Macau is like flying to any other country.

But before you start your 1 Day Macau Itinerary, make sure you check if there are any entry requirements regarding your nationality! If you’re in the EU, USA, Australia, and the majority of Asia, you can enter Macau for short stays without the need for a visa, though you will still need a valid passport duh.

Note that since Macau is a Special Administrative Region of China, Macau operates with their own border controls, so even if you are traveling from Hong Kong or China, you’ll still need to go through an Immigration process.

How to Get to Macau from Hong Kong by Ferry

Okay, so one of the easiest ways (and also the most scenic) to get to Macau is by taking a Ferry from Hong Kong, and if you are following my 1 Day Macau Itinerary, then it’s already likely that you’ll be starting from Hong Kong anyway. Ferries also go the other way around, cause after my Macau trip, I took a ferry to Hong Kong.

Starting from Hong Kong, the ferries depart from 3 main ports:

Hong Kong Island (Sheung Wan)
Kowloon (Tsim Sha Tsui)
Hong Kong International Airport.

The journey usually takes around 55 minutes to an hour. Ticket prices go for about HKD 170 - HKD 200 ( ~22 - 25 USD) for a one-way economy seat, though prices can go up a bit on weekends and holidays. First class seats are also available at a higher price.

I recommend booking your ferry tickets in advance, because the seats sell out quite fast. I used this site to grab my tickets quickly and easily. There are two main ferry companies: TurboJET and Cotai Water Jet. TurboJET drops you at Macau Outer Harbour (closer to Senado Square and the historic area), while Cotai Water Jet arrives at Taipa, near the Cotai Strip, so pick whichever fits best with your 1 Day Macau Itinerary!

I personally took a first class ride with TurboJET from Macau to Hong Kong and the service was actually really nice, a steward came to offer us some drinks and light snacks, I got myself a lemon tea and a tuna sandwich, was it worth it? probably not, but was it nice? yes.

How to Get to Macau from Hong Kong by Shuttle Bus

One last method to get to Macau for your 1 Day Macau Itinerary is via an air conditioned Shuttle Bus across the Hong Kong - Zhuhai - Macau Bridge which also happens to be the longes sea crossing bridge in the world! Though this method of transport isn’t quite as popular as most people prefer to take a ferry.

Though the Shuttle Bus is more affordable compared to the ferry with the price coming in at just HKD 65 (~ 8 USD) for a one-way trip, ad the journey would take you around 50 minutes assuming the traffic is good. The shuttle buses run 24/7, with departures every 5 to 10 minutes during peak hours and every 15–30 minutes late at night.

The Shuttle Bus operates from the Hong Kong Port, though you can buy tickets at the port, I highly recommend booking in advance to save time and secure your seat, especially on weekends or holidays. If you are looking to save a bit of money for your 1 Day Macau Itinerary to use it for shopping, the getting a Shuttle Bus from Macau to Hong Kong is a great option.

Best Time to Visit for your 1 Day Macau Itinerary

OK, hold up, how’s the weather in Macau? and when is the best time to visit Macau? Well, when my family was planning our Macau Itinerary, we decided we wanted to go during the Spring months when the weather was a bit cooler. But it’s all up to you though, Spring and Winter is cool but a bit gloomy, Summer and Fall is hot but sunny.

Ultimately it’s up to you, so here's what to expect in each season to make planning your 1 Day Macau Itinerary a bit easier.

Visiting Macau During Spring/Summer

I recommend planning your Macau Itinerary during Spring which is between the months of March and May. Around that time is when the weather is best with an average temperature hovering around 18°C - 26°C (64°F - 79°F). It’s not too hot, it’s not humid, it’s sunny, and it’s the perfect weather for if you’re wanting to walk around Macau’s historic center and explore all the landmarks.

Summer in Macau though, which is from the months of June to August is very hot, sunny, humid, and quite frankly a lot of tourists will be going to Macau during that time so prices on hotels and flights will go up. The temperature can go as high as 35°C (91°F), it might not sound that bad but combine with the humidity and you’ll be finding yourself taking a shower in your own sweat. Heck, I went during Spring and I was still sweating, though that might just be a “me” problem.

Visiting Macau During Fall/Winter

If you're planning your Macau Itinerary in the Fall months of September - November, expect the weather to be cooler compared to the summer with lower humidity and clearer skies. The temperatures are around 22°C - 28°C (72°F - 82°F), which for me is still a bit too hot, but it’s alright, walking around eating delicious Macau street food at Taipa Village during this weather is fine by me.

If you’re imagine Winter in Macau to be like that in Japan with all the snow and what not, I’m sorry to burst your bubble but snow is unheard of in Macau even during the winter months of December to February. However, the weather is cooler at a nice 12°C - 18°C (54°F - 64°F) which for me is perfect. There are less tourists, the atmosphere is more relaxed and also during this time, the Chinese New Year festivities are right around the corner, so if you want to see that then planning your Macau Itinerary during the winter months is the right move. Just be sure to bring a jacket.

My Suggested 1 Day Macau Itinerary

Alright so finally, here is my suggested 1 Day Macau Itinerary, feel free to modify it to your needs or preferences. So a quick brief, you’ll be exploring the Historic Center of Macau which is the Senado Square, eating some delicious Macau street food, check out the Macau Tower, Visit the luxury Venetian resort and ride a gondola, do some shopping of course, and ending the day at enjoying the Casinos or watching some performances and shows.

If you want to make the most of your 1 Day Macau Itinerary without stressing over transportation or getting lost in unfamiliar streets, I highly recommend booking the Macau Hop-On Hop-Off Open Top Bus Tour. I was actually recommended this tour by the concierge at my hotel and honestly, it helped so much especially as I was unfamiliar with the city of Macau. The route covers all the major landmarks from Senado Square to the Cotai Strip and even Macau Tower all while giving you the flexibility to explore at your own pace.

Alright, so without further ado, let’s get going on this 1 Day Macau Itinerary!

Morning: Exploring Portuguese Colonial Charm at Senado Square

Okay, starting off our 1 Day Macau Itinerary, I am going to bring you on an exodus to the Historic Center of Macau, the Senado Square (Largo do Senado). This area is actually listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to it’s incredibly beautiful neoclassical European architecture as well as it’s rich history as being the center of political power during the Portuguese colonization of Macau.

I always recommend people to come to Senado Square whenever they are in Macau, and especially during the morning when the weather is not too hot, it’s just a perfect place to explore. The plaza’s mosaic floor tiles, the central water fountain, the white and pastel European-style buildings lining both sides of the plaza, Senado Square is also a great photogenic place to update your Instagram or whatever social media is trending right now.

To me, aside from eating, learning about the history and culture of a country is one of the most beneficial things you can do during your travels. The history of Senado Square dates back to the late 16th century, around the start of Portuguese colonialism in Macau. There are many historic landmarks to discover such as the Leal Senado Building, the Holy House of Mercy, and the St. Dominic’s Church (my personal favorite landmark).

I spent a good 2-3 hours here because in addition to the historical landmarks there are also a lots of opportunities for shopping. From local handmade (or mass produced?) souvenirs, to souvenir snacks, to luxury shopping brands, Pop Mart Toys, sneakers, fashion, etc… You’ll want to constantly keep your wallet in check or else you’ll go broke…

But seriously though, no Macau itinerary is complete without a visit to Senado Square.

And just a few hundred steps uphill, north of the main Senado Square area is where Macau’s most famous landmark, the Ruins of St. Paul, is located, and right next to that is the Monte Fort.

The Ruins of St. Paul is the remains of what was once the largest Catholic church in Asia, nowadays, only the front facade has survived. Adjacent to the ruins are another set of ruins, the ruins of Mount Fortress, Macau’s main military defensive base overlooking the bay of Macau and also providing a very scenic vista of Macau city.

In addition to the main area of the Senado Square, these two landmarks are both must-sees on any well-planned 1 Day Macau Itinerary. Trust me, there’s no better place to begin your Macau adventure than right here.

Lunch: The Best Macau Street Food at Senado Square

For breakfast, brunch, or lunch I actually recommend you save your stomach for some of Macau’s most delicious street food located right at Senado Square.

Actually, one of my favorite things to do in Senado Square is just simply hopping around the different street food stalls trying all sorts of snacks. Throughout the winding alleys of Senado Square, you’ll find vendors handing out free samples of almond cookies, jerky, and local pastries. It’s also a great opportunity to try Macau’s iconic street foods like the Portuguese Egg Tart and the Meat Jerky.

For the best Portuguese Egg Tarts I recommend Lord Stow’s Bakery or Margaret’s Cafe e Nata. But if you are meaning for a proper meal, something more substantial then I recommend these restaurants:

Wong Chi Kei - A favorite local restaurant serving wonton noodles, also famous for their signature pork chop buns, another classic Macau street food dish.
Cafe Kam Ma Lon - A small breakfast cafe, really great Macanese pork chop bun, also a great place for breakfast or brunch with their pastries, thick French toast, and coffee.
Leng Kei - A hole in the wall street food restaurant serving Chinese BBQ meats like the juiciest roasted duck and the crispiest roasted pork belly over rice.

Afternoon: Visit the Cotai Strip and the Venetian Macao Resort

I hope you’ve got your fill of the historic side of Macau, cause next up on your 1 Day Macau Itinerary will bring you to explore the modern glitz and glamor of the Cotai Strip, better known as the “Las Vegas of Asia”. You better prepare your wallets because located on Taipa island, south of the Macau Peninsula, the Cotai Strip is packed full of luxury shopping brands, high-class resorts, money sucking casinos, and some of the most elaborate shows imaginable.

Within the Cotai Strips are various resorts and landmarks, and honestly it’s a bit difficult and confusing to find which ones that are worth seeing, but luckily for you, I am a great blogger so of course I did all the work and research for you, so here are the iconic landmarks that I think are worth your time to check out at the Cotai Strip:

The Parisian Macao - A famous Parisian themed shopping mall and resort, also you cannot miss going up to the observation deck of the famous replica Eiffel Tower!
Wynn Palace - One of the most luxurious resorts in Macau, its SkyCab cable car is a popular activity which glides over a performance lake with music and fountain shows.
Studio City Macao - A resort with great Hollywood vibes and standout attractions like the Golden Reel Ferris wheel, shaped like a figure 8 and suspended between two towers!
City of Dreams Macau - Sleek, modern, and packed with luxury designer stores. A massive casino is also present, this is also the place where you can watch the House of Dancing Water performance show.

You can enter all the resorts in the Cotai Strip for FREE, no need to be a guest staying at these resorts.

Now, I’ve left out The Venetian Macao from the above list, and it’s because I think this iconic luxury resort of Macau deserves a section of it’s own in this 1 Day Macao Itinerary. The Venetian Macao is like an indoor Venice, I’m not kidding.

There is a large Casino on the first floor but that’s not the interesting part ok, I don’t have a gambling problem. The cool part of the Venetian Macao is The Grand Canal Shoppes. A large shopping plaza designed to literally be an indoor air conditioned Venice, complete with water canals and a friggin Gondola that you can ride on. I went on the Gondolas and while it wasn’t exactly like Venice (though I’ve never been to Venice) it still was a really cool thing to experience.

I spent a solid 2 hours here just wandering through The Grand Canal Shoppes taking pictures, and oh I forgot to mention, there are of course luxury fashion brands and some souvenir shops, so yeah.

The Venetian Macao also features a sprawling food court but I honestly do not recommend it because it’s always packed full of people.

Evening: Enjoy the Casinos and Entertainment

When the sun sets over the Cotai Strip, that’s when Macau gets real exciting after a full day of shopping and sightseeing, it would only make sense otherwise end this 1 Day Macau Itinerary and a more relaxing note, by heading to one of the Cotai Strip’s many world-class casinos, of course :)

Now personally, I don’t gamble, I’ve tried once when I went to the Genting Highlands Resort in Malaysia and I had no idea how the machines worked so I kinda just lost some money… But anyways, even if you don’t gamble like I do it’s worth it to walk through the casinos in The Venetian Macao, the Wynn Palace, or the Galaxy Macau.

While I didn’t spend much time at the Casinos for my 1 Day Macau Itinerary, I did enjoy one of the absolute best live performances I have ever seen. The Cotai Strip is famous for it’s over the top entertainment and if you have time and you’re lucky enough to be present when the shows are on, I highly recommend you grab a ticket to The House of Dancing Water show.

It’s an aquatic show that takes place in a huge circular theatre. The performance tells a story of the hero who ventures into a mysterious kingdom to rescue an imprisoned princess. As the name suggests, water is the main theme of this performance and it’s the power that bonds these two characters together.

It’s one of those performances that leaves your mouth wide open, the acrobatics, the stage design, the brilliant story telling, everything was just a visual feast for my eyes. Make sure to book your tickets in advance online, though because they do sell out quickly, especially on weekends and holidays.

The House of Dancing Water was seriously the best part of my 1 Day Macau Itinerary. To be honest, I don’t watch a lot of live performances so maybe I am just easily impressed, but still. It’s amazing.

Dinner: Gorging yourself at the JW Marriott Macau Hotel Buffet

Ok, that was a full day of sightseeing, shopping, and gambling, you must be really tired and hungry right? Well fortunately, the Cotai Strip is packed with plenty of fancy restaurants from celebrity chef eateries to Michelin awarded fine dining. But the eatery that I was most excited about for my Macau Itinerary are the International Buffets. Since I was already staying at the JW Marriot Macau, the obvious choice was to dine at their Urban Kitchen International buffet. Which just so happens to be the best international buffet in Macau.

This upscale buffet offers up a plethora of diverse cuisines and dishes. the Urban Kitchen buffet is divided into six distinct food zones from Japanese sashimi, to Chinese Peking Duck, to Italian Pasta, Steaks, and so much more. Also I cannot forget about the huge army of desserts available for the sweet toothed among us ;)

Dinner buffet prices is around 650 MOP (~80 USD) which I think is incredible value for not only the options but the quality of food on offer. However, I do recommend you consider booking in advance at platforms like Klook where you can also enjoy a good discount for the Urban Kitchen Buffet.

More Things to Do in your 1 Day Macau Itinerary

Alright we’ve come to the end of my 1 Day Macau Itinerary, but there is still so much to do in Macau. If you are staying more than 1 day, or you happen to find yourself with some extra time then don’t worry.

On my holiday, I discovered a few fun activities that made my Macau itinerary more enjoyable, these additional attractions and experiences are worth squeezing into your Macau Itinerary if you have time. Plus many of them are easy to book online with steep discounts through trusted platforms like Klook (which I use to book all my activities).

Studio City Water Park - Great for families, Macau’s largest water park with exciting slides and relaxing lazy rivers.

Macau Open Top Bus Night Tour - A 1 hour bus tour through Macau during the night with all the bright lights and glamour.
Macau Tower Skywalk - Not for the faint of heart! A 20 minute walk around the outer rim of the Macau tower, safety harnesses provided of course.

Where to Eat & Drink During your 1 Day Macau Itinerary

Enjoying Fancy Restaurants at the Cotai Strip

Alternatively, if you don’t want to dine at a buffet like I did in my 1 Day Macau Itinerary and would rather prefer a proper sit down restaurant for your evening dinner in the Cotai Strip, there are plenty of fine dining places to choose from, most of them have been awarded a Michelin Star (or 3):

Best Places for Nightlife for your 1 Day Macau Itinerary

Nightlife in Macau is all about the cocktails and live music, oh and rooftop bars. Though you probably guessed it, a lot of these nightlife spots are centered in the Cotai Strip.

If you are in the Cotai Strip already, I recommend you check out the bars at the MGM Cotai, more specifically the Sky 21 or Bar Patuá. Both of these bars serve up a stunning skyline view of Macau with a classy atmosphere that’s perfect for pre-dinner drinks. I personally loved how easy it was to hop from one hotel bar to another, in fact, almost everything in the Cotai Strip is connected to each other one way or another.

If you want a bit more energy then the Club Cubic and the Para Club both at the City of Dreams is the place to go. They’re high octane dance clubs and they’re also one of the largest clubs in Asia and often hosts international DJs. Though I personally do not like these types of nightlife scenes I can see how these dance clubs could be a great place for you to end off your 1 Day Macau Itinerary.
