Which Areas to Stay in Koh Chang Island

Which areas to stay in koh chang island

Such a lovely place for a nice evening cocktail

Koh Chang is a huge island and it’s divided into 2 sides, the east and west. The east side is underdeveloped for tourism and locals mainly live here, it’s also where schools and police stations are located. The west side of the island is the tourism side and it’s where you’ll find the best hotels in Koh Chang. So let’s go over some of the potential areas for you to consider booking your Koh Chang hotels.

White Sand Beach - Best for First-Time Visitors

White Sand Beach Koh Chang

The White Snd Beach area is the most developed area in Koh Chang

If you’re visiting Koh Chang for the first time, White Sand Beach is hands down the best place to stay, and the are that I always recommend. It’s the most well developed (in terms of tourism) stretch of sand on Koh Chang and it’s here where you’ll find a wide range of Koh Chang hotels that fit everyone’s budgets and needs.

From luxury beachfront resorts with infinity pools to affordable guesthouses tucked just off the main road. Everything you’ll ever need is also within walking distance, whether it’s beach bars, the best seafood restaurants in Koh Chang, massage parlors (not those ones), or simple cafes where you can start your morning with a cup of coffee. At night, White Sand Beach has a lively but relaxed nightlife scene with activities like watching the fire shows, and enjoying beach bars with live music

Convenience is also a big plus, It’s one of the first tourism areas you access when you arrive on the island via ferry and transportation to and from destinations is a breeze thanks to the many Rod Song Thaews (pickup truck taxis) roaming the area.

If you don’t know where to stay, White Sand Beach is the default option in my humble opinion.

Klong Prao Beach - Best for Families & Relaxation

Klong Prao Beach Koh Chang Beach

The Klong Prao Beach area is a relaxing area for families

If you’re traveling with family or want a more quiet atmosphere compared to White Sand Beach then the Klong Prao Beach Area is the best place to stay in Koh Chang for you.

The beach stretches long and wide, with calm waters and fewer tourists compared. There’s a good number of family-friendly Koh Chang hotels and resorts here that offer big swimming pools, big rooms, and big kid areas that make the area perfect for traveling with your little ones, such as the Coconut Beach Resort, Koh Chang.

Along with the plentiful resort options, Klong Prao really hits the sweet spot with plenty of dining options nearby, and a relaxed environment where you can actually enjoy the island at your own pace. Along the beach is a “Klong” or a sort of “river”, where you can rent a kayak to paddle around, a fun activity for everyone! Staying at a Klong Prao Beach hotel in Koh Chang means you’ll have everything you need for a laid-back vacation without the late-night party scene.

Kai Bae Beach - Great for Couples

Kai Bae Beach Koh Chang

Kai Bae Beach is a great place for a romantic evening stroll

Kai Bae Beach is one of the most romantic areas to stay in Koh Chang and a perfect place for couples. The vibe here is more relaxed than White Sand but a little livelier than Klong Prao, making it a great middle ground. You’ll find plenty of mid-range Koh Chang hotels along the beach, plus charming boutique resorts designed with couples in mind. You can expect accommodations to include things like cozy villas, beachfront pools, and rooms with sunset views.

A highlight nearby is the Kai Bae Viewpoint which is part of the Mu Ko Chang National Park, where you can catch some of the best panoramic views of the island, as well as enjoy a quick hike, perfect for a sunset date with your partner.

Also what I like about Kai Bae is that you don’t need to go far for good food or a fun evening out. The area has lots of restaurants serving everything from seafood to international dishes, one of my favorites for exceptional Italian food is Mordi E Fuggi, pastas are so good there. Of course there are small bars where you can enjoy cocktails in a chill atmosphere.

Lonely Beach - Best for Backpackers & Budget Travelers

Lonely Beach Koh Chang

Despite the name, Lonely Beach is far from lonely, you’ll meet a lot of people here

Finally, if you’re backpacking through Koh Chang or just want a more affordable accommodation since you’ll be out and about all day anyway, then Lonely Beach is the spot you’ll probably end up at. This is the backpacker hub of Koh Chang, known for its affordable guesthouses, budget-friendly bungalows, and plenty of lively hostels in Koh Chang where you can make friends with other travelers.

The beach itself is a bit rocky in parts, honestly not really that great of a beach, but here it’s the community vibe and energy that really make Lonely Beach stand out.

Of course with backpacking areas, at night, Lonely Beach comes alive with plenty of bars, eclectic live music, and crazy beach parties. Overall, Lonely Beach in Koh Chang is a good place to stay if you’re one a budget and looking for more social experiences.

Best Luxury Hotels in Koh Chang

best luxury hotels in koh chang

I always find it kind of counterintuitive that there is a pool literally next to the beach

There are quite a few luxury hotels in Koh Chang with a lot of them being located in Klong Prao Beach. These Koh Chang hotels and resorts are perfect for families and couples as they are often really big complexes with many facilities and activities.

Santhiya Koh Chang Resort

Santhiya Koh Chang Resort

I wouldn’t mind spending a few hours just lounging by this pool

Perched on Klong Prao Beach with its own private beachfront access, Santhiya Koh Chang Resort is one of the standout luxury hotels in Koh Chang. The resort is absolutely gorgeous, combining traditional Thai architecture with luxury wood carvings, elevated rooms, and careful planning and landscaping around the pools and the resort’s many villas.

The rooms are spacious, many even offering private or semi-private pools, and bathrooms that offer both a bathtub and shower. Of course, all the amenities you ever need are readily available in your rooms.

Santhiya Koh Chang has two large swimming pools, free WiFi, a fitness centre, and a spa offering your all important Thai massages and wellness treatments. For dining, there are three on-site restaurants:

  • Chantara Restaurant - Serves Thai and international dishes throughout the day.

  • Saaitara Restaurant - For breakfast.

  • By the Sea Restaurant & Bar - A restaurant perfect for cocktails or dinner with ocean views.

The staff are friendly and provides excellent service, the atmosphere feels romantic and relaxing, and the facilities are top quality. It’s a great choice if you want a luxury resort where you can unwind in style with family or loved ones.

Pros:

  • Beautiful Klong Prao Beach location as well as private beach

  • Multiple dining options (By the Sea Restaurant & Bar, Chantara Restaurant, Saaitara Restaurant) with sea views.

  • Luxurious and comfortable villas with private pools

  • Good selection of extra facilities and amenities like a spa, fitness centre, sundeck, large pools.

Cons:

  • Of course, with luxury comes high pricing, also a damage deposit of 3,000 THB is required

  • Santhiya is a larger resort, peak tourist season can see lots of people, and can be crowded and busy.

  • Location, while peaceful, is a little removed from the more vibrant nightlife parts of Koh Chang.

KC Grande Resort & Spa

KC Grande Resort & Spa

That towel swan is such a nice touch of hospitality

Another popular luxury hotel in Koh Chang that offers both beachfront access and tons of amenities is KC Grande Resort & Spa. Located right on White Sand Beach, the rooms and villas at KC Grande are spacious, with tasteful décor that leans toward modern but warm wood tones, clean lines, and balconies or terraces overlooking either the sea or the tropical gardens.

Rooms also have upgrades for higher-end options like seaside villas or rooms with pool access. In total, KC Grande Resort has four swimming pools! That’s 3 more than anyone ever needs. Also a beachfront private area, a full spa (massages, sauna), a fitness centre, and free WiFi, of course. In terms of dining options, there is The Beach Restaurant that serves Thai and European Seafood, and the KC Restaurant, and Horizon Pool Bar for more casual one plate dishes, drinks, and evening cocktails.

I would recommend KC Grande Resort & Spa for couples, families, or anyone wanting a premium stay that doesn’t feel isolated because this is one of the best luxury hotels in Koh Chang.

Pros:

  • Great beachfront location on White Sand Beach with excellent walkability to nearby local restaurants and shops.

  • Good facilities, multiple pools, large garden spaces, full scale spa, fitness center…

  • Plenty of on-site dining options,

Cons:

  • Some “Hillside”-zone rooms are separated from the seaside zone by a road, not a great layout, you’ll need to cross the road for certain facilities.

  • Pricey, value is up to you, but during high tourism season expect to pay a lot.

  • Some reviews mentioned some minor issues (e.g. AC condensation or occasional noise), something to be aware of.

Best Mid-Range Hotels in Koh Chang

Best Mid-Range Hotels in Koh Chang

Bungalows for that beach aesthetic

The best hotels in Koh Chang aren’t all luxury. There are some surprisingly great hotels on the island with reasonable rates, and if you travel during the off season, the prices can get dirt cheap. Below are some of my recommendations for mid-range hotels in Koh Chang.

The Dewa Koh Chang

The Dewa Koh Chang

Good comfy rooms with all the amenities you’ll need

Like many of the other hotels in Koh Chang, The Dewa Koh Chang sits on the beachfront on Klong Prao Beach The location is excellent because you get direct beach access and it’s also a short walk to nearby beach restaurants, shops, plus the environment is calm to relax.

The Dewa Koh Chang features spacious rooms with modern Thai décor, high ceilings, balconies (some overlooking the sea or pool), and bathrooms with bathtubs, always a plus in my book.

In terms of amenities and facilities, The Dewa is surprisingly packed for it’s price range. You’ll find a large outdoor swimming pool (over 6,460 ft²), free WiFi throughout, a spa offering massage and wellness services, plus water-sports options like kayaking, and a good range of food & drink with the two restaurants on site which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The Dewa is a solid choice for mid-range hotels in Koh Chang

Pros:

  • Good relaxing beachfront location.

  • Spacious, well-designed rooms with balconies, bathtubs in many rooms for more comfort.

  • Great selection of extra facilities like a large pool, spa, water-sports, and free WiFi.

  • Two good on-site restaurants plus easy access to nearby restaurants and attractions.

  • Priced really well, rates are reasonable and not over the top compared to the value you are getting.

Cons:

  • Large resort so some areas may feel less intimate and can get pretty packed.

  • Extra charges (spa, water-sports, maybe minibar) can add up.

  • Walk to certain local nightlife or shops might still require some transport or longer walk (depending on how far you choose to explore).

Aana Resort & Spa Koh Chang

Aana Resort & Spa Koh Chang

The rooms at AANA are so nice and clean

AANA Resort & Villas Koh Chang is a mid-range gem set along Klong Prao Beach, offering a calm riverside setting with quick access to the beach, though not direct access to the beachfront. The resort sits beside the Klong Plu River, so many rooms, villas, and suites have views of the garden, river, or mountains. There is a shuttle boat service to the beach (just a few minutes ride).

Rooms are quite spacious and well-furnished, many with large balconies, daybeds, and modern bathrooms with bathtubs + showers. Some of the villas even include private plunge pools. Free WiFi, air-conditioning, and comfortable common spaces also add to the appeal.

As for amenities, AANA Resort & Villas delivers more than you might expect for its price bracket among Koh Chang hotels. There are two outdoor swimming pools, spa services, and a riverside restaurant called Baan Ta Klua Restaurant that serves Thai and international cuisine. Breakfast buffet is included with some room booking options, but I wouldn’t recommend it if you need to pay extra.

There are other activities on offer too: canoeing, kayaking, trips to see fireflies, and boat rides to nearby beach spots. The resort also offers free parking, room service, and relaxing common areas. For mid-range hotels in Koh Chang, Aana is a great choice.

Pros:

  • Very good value for money, great selection for amenities (rooms, pools, spa) and extra activities.

  • Spacious, comfortable rooms/villas, many with balconies or plunge pools.

  • Riverside setting gives a peaceful vibe.

  • Good restaurant with Thai & international food.

Cons:

  • Not directly beachfront: you’ll need to use the shuttle boat or walk to get to the sandy beach.

  • As with many resorts, some extra costs apply for certain activities like kayaking, room upgrades, spa, etc.

  • The riverfront location, while scenic, may mean some humidity, bugs, or mosquitos depending on season.

  • Breakfast buffet is an additional 350 THB (if not already included in room) and is NOT worth it.

Gajapuri Resort & Spa

Gajapuri Resort & Spa

I love the cozy wooden design and aesthetic

Gajapuri Resort & Spa on Kai Bae Beach is a beautiful mid-range choice among the best hotels in Koh Chang, especially if you’re traveling as a couple who want some comfort and peace without splurging on the luxury hotels. It’s close enough to walking-street restaurants, bars, and convenience stores in Kai Bae to step out for meals or drinks easily, yet far enough from the busiest parts of Koh Chang to feel relaxed.

The resort is laid out like a serene jungle village with wooden walkways snaking between garden cottages, deluxe rooms, beachside villas, and pool villas. Many rooms feature a private or partial sea views, private balconies or patios, premium bedding (like Egyptian cotton sheets, even Tempur-Pedic mattresses in some rooms), DVD players, and thoughtful extras like minibars and good WiFi.

There are two outdoor salt or low-chlorine pools near the sea, including one infinity-style pool that leads almost directly out onto the beach. The resort has its own spa, GajaPinn Spa, offering Thai massages and wellness treatments. For dining there is a beach bar and a good restaurant (Gaja Chaan / Matang Restaurant) serving Thai and international cuisine. Oh and I can’t forget that beach massages are also available.

Pros:

  • Very good location on Kai Bae Beach, nice mix of beach access + proximity to restaurants, shops, and bars in Kai Bae.

  • Multiple room types including villas and pool villas, many with sea or garden views, premium bedding, nice extras.

  • Two outdoor swimming pools, spa (massages, wellness), beach bar, decent restaurants, beach-massages.

  • Good value: you get a lot of nice touches (private patios, good design, extras) for mid-range pricing.

Cons:

  • Beachfront is nice but not perfect, parts of the sea in front have rocks or coral underfoot, water isn’t always clean, and the beach is narrow in places.

  • Extras like spa treatments, beach massages, premium room types cost more; some amenities might not be included.

  • During high tide, the water reaches quite close to the terrace/promenade in front, so beach access depends on tide for certain parts.

Best Budget Hotels in Koh Chang

Best Budget Hotels in Koh Chang

Budget hotels don’t always mean bad!

If you’re looking for budget hotels in Koh Chang, there are many to choose from but a lot of them do not provide the extra amenities that you would expect from the other hotels and resorts in Koh Chang. Plus a lot of these cheaper budget options are hostels, great for if you want to make some new friends.

Oasis Koh Chang

Oasis Koh Chang

I could never hang out here, too many mosquitos

At the top of my list of recommendations for budget hotels in Koh Chang, Oasis Koh Chang is a budget-friendly hotel in Lonely Beach that still feels quite special. The property is set on a hill, surrounded by lush jungle and mountain views, yet just a 5-minute walk to local restaurants, shops, and the busier areas of Lonely Beach.

The nearest sandy beach is about 500 meters feet away, which is a bit of a walk but still okay. Rooms are simple but clean, often bungalow-style or studio-style, with private bathrooms, air conditioning, verandas, and plenty of natural light. The hotel also features aThe shared lounge/co-working/dining space which is quite cozy.

As for amenities and facilities, they are quite solid for a budget hotel in Koh Chang. Oasis has an outdoor swimming pool, free high-speed WiFi, free private parking, room service, and a restaurant on site that serves Thai, Western, and international dishes. The restaurant also overlooks views of jungle and ocean, and there's a treehouse lookout that’s popular for sunset views. Breakfast is à la carte.

Pros:

  • Very good value hotel, affordable with solid amenities and facilities.

  • Great location in quiet hillside/jungle setting, but close to Lonely Beach’s restaurants, shops & nightlife.

  • The rooms are simple but nice with private bathrooms, air-conditioning, and balconies.

  • On-site restaurant serving Thai & international food, and a treehouse lounge/lookout with views.

  • Outdoor pool, free WiFi, free parking, much appreciated

Cons:

  • If you want the beach, you’ll need to walk 500 meters to it.

  • Breakfast is à la carte, so variety may be less than buffet-style if that matters to you.

  • Lonely Beach is the nightlife zone of Koh Chang so if you want ultra-quiet nights and peace it might not be for you.

Pajamas Koh Chang Hostel

Pajamas Koh Chang Hostel

A small little hotel but a very charming one, especially with that floating duck

Pajamas Koh Chang is a budget gem in the Klong Prao Beach area that feels more like a boutique hostel than a “budget hotel” perfect for if you're traveling light but still want comfort. Again not a beachfront hotel but it’s only a 2 minute walk to the beach.

Both private rooms and dorms are available, all with air conditioning. private rooms have en suite bathrooms, while dorms have a shared bathroom. There’s a swimming pool, free high-speed WiFi across the hostel, and free parking. The décor is bright and clean, very charming and uplifting I would say. And the public spaces are designed for hanging out with hammocks, couches, a shared lounge.

On the food side and extra amenities, Pajamas Koh Chang delivers more than many hostels in the budget class. Breakfast is included and there is plenty of variety (continental, Asian, vegetarian options). There’s also a restaurant on site, Nong Bua Seafood. The Pajamas Koh Chang also offers tour/ticket services, a bar, a shared lounge, and has some fun community events from time to time. From just the general happy bright vibe, Pajamas Koh Chang is one of the best budget hotels in Koh Chang

Pros:

  • Super close to Klong Prao Beach (2-minute walk) while being relatively quiet and relaxing.

  • Comfortable and clean rooms with air-conditioning, private rooms with private bathrooms.

  • Great value for the money, breakfast included, free WiFi, free parking, on site restaurants

  • The atmosphere and decor is really nice, nice common areas, nice lounge spaces, nice hammocks, nice relaxing pool. Really nice.

Cons:

  • Shared bathrooms might be an issue for some, I know that it’s not for me.

  • If you stay in a dorm, you may have less privacy and more noise.

Paradise Cottage

Paradise Cottage Koh Chang

Needs a few more beach chairs

Paradise Cottage is another solid budget choice among Koh Chang hotels, especially if you’re looking for comfort, good food, and a chill waterside setting without paying high prices. It’s located in Lonely Beach, about a 10 minute walk from the main beach strip.

Despite being budget, the resort offers a good rooms with clean, simple amenities (fan or air-con options), private bathrooms, terraces or balconies overlooking garden or oceanish views, and of course the all important free WiFi. There’s an outdoor swimming pool, massage service, free private parking, and good common spaces for hanging out.

Food is one of the perks here: Paradise Cottage has its own restaurant and bar onsite serving both Thai and European cuisine, and breakfast a la carte is also available (you can pick between continental or Thai). It’s a very simple accommodation but one that just gets the simple things right

Pros:

  • Very good value for its price, decent amenities (pool, restaurant, massage) plus clean comfortable rooms.

  • Excellent location in Lonely Beach, quiet enough for rest, yet close enough to restaurants, bars, and beach access.

  • Free WiFi and free parking add a lot of convenience, breakfast is also included

Cons:

  • Not beachfront you’ll need to walk 10 minutes to the beach

  • Rooms are simple, maybe too simple, not much extras.

Best Boutique Hotels in Koh Chang

A quick little dip in the pool for me

These smaller, stylish hotels are unique in design, feature beachfront locations, and a more intimate atmosphere that is perfect for couples. So below are some of my recommendations for boutique hotels in Koh Chang.

Little Sunshine Resort Koh Chang

Cliff Cottage Resort Koh Chang

I love the large windows to just gaze out into nature

Little Sunshine Boutique Beach Resort & Spa is a great option for boutique hotels in Koh Chang. The resort sits right on a quiet bayfront in Klong Son Bay, with its own private beach area and a beach that’s peaceful, clean, and great for relaxing walks at sunset.

The rooms come in various styles, double rooms, apartments, villas, suites, many of them with sea or bay views. The decorations are intimate and charming with wood accents and open balconies. The rooms are clean and very comfortable, spacious beds.

You get your basic facilities like an outdoor swimming pool, spa services, free WiFi, free private parking, and dining onsite. There are also free kayak rentals and a lovely garden to chill at. I like the atmosphere and environment of Little Sunshine Resort a lot.

  • Good location, clean and comfortable rooms, with a gorgeous boutique vibe

  • Amenities such as pool, spa, kayak access, free wifi, free parking, and included breakfast.

Cons:

  • Smaller boutique hotel, not a lot of extras that you might find in the larger hotels

Nature Beach Resort

Nature Beach Resort Koh Chang

I like the color blue

And finally, the last Koh Chang Hotels in my list of recommendations is the Nature Beach Resort, laid-back boutique hotel nestled on the sands of Lonely Beach.

The resort features 60 standalone bungalows, each offering a private balcony or terrace, many with garden or partial sea views. Rooms are air-conditioned and come fully equipped with essentials like free WiFi, refrigerators, and private bathrooms with hot showers. The decoration is simple and rustic, with thatched roofs and natural materials, which makes you feel like you are in a cozy island-style atmosphere.

Nature Beach Resort also boasts a beachfront swimming pool, a spa offering Thai and aromatherapy massages, and the popular Nature Rocks restaurant which serves a variety of Thai and Western dishes an of course seafood. Breakfast options includes your usual Asian and American fare, and the resort's bar often features live music and fire shows in the evenings.

Cons:

  • Some rooms are a bit old and need refurbishing.

  • This is a fairly popular resort so during the peak tourism seasons it will get busy

  • Limited nightlife options within walking distance.

Tips for Booking Hotels in Koh Chang for Cheap

If you’re stuck on finding the best prices for booking your hotels in Koh Chang, here are a few tips I want to share to help you snag the best deals and get the most value for your money.

  1. Compare Weekday to Weekend Prices - Hotel rates in Koh Chang can vary quite a bit depending on the day of the week and season. I usually recommend booking from Sunday to Thursday, as nightly rates are often lower than on weekends when locals and short-break travelers fill the rooms. For example, a mid-range resort at White Sand Beach might cost $80 per night on a Saturday, but only $30 if you stay on a Tuesday, that’s literally more than %50 off!

  2. Book Through Reputable Platforms - For every trip to Koh Chang, and any trip in general, I rely on Booking.com. They offer competitive prices, discounts, and flexible booking options. A lot of the times exclusive deals and room upgrade options are also available on there. Plus with Booking.com they show the final price at checkout, no misleading hidden costs.

  3. Consider Hotel Packages - Many Koh Chang resorts, especially the boutique and mid-range hotels, offer packages that include perks like breakfast, spa vouchers, airport transfers, or island tours. If you can find a package that fits your plans, it’s a fantastic way to maximize value and make your stay stress-free.

  4. Book Early During Peak Season - Or better yet, travel during off seasons. Koh Chang sees its busiest tourism months during school holidays, long weekends, and peak season (November to February). If you’re traveling during these times, book your Koh Chang hotel well in advance. prices WILL get higher, and availability can be limited, so early planning is key to avoid disappointment.
